If you’ve ever seen the previews for Babies, I would bet you could hardly resist a smile and perhaps a moment of curiosity. This documentary film is an inventive look at the idea of humanity and how universal it really is.
Directed by the award-winning filmmaker, Thomas Balmes, Babies captures the lives of four…well…babies. From birth to their first steps, audiences witness four very different lives, however, by the end of the film, audiences embrace the similarities and beauty of all life. Ponijao (my personal favorite) lives near Opuwo, Namibia; Bayarjargal lives in Mongolia; Mari resides in Tokyo, Japan; and finally, Hattie lives her life in San Fransisco. The film captures the everyday life of a baby within their culture, therefore producing a film that is raw and imaginative. The documentary films these children and their families and the ups and downs of being a baby.
Each frame is ingeniously crafted and is edited perfectly to create a film you will not forget. Such beauty and admiration was put into filming the lives of these four families and this is demonstrated through the film’s artistic and inventive flair. There are plenty of rare camera moments that will have you smiling and laughing in no time. This film reminds me to appreciate the beauty of life, no matter what culture you practice or where your location is in the world. Think I sound a little too corny? Give Babies a watch and you’ll know exactly what I mean.
