Brokedown Palace

I am actually proud of myself for reviewing this lost but not forgotten film from the 90′s! I would consider this movie a “chick flick” and I actually love this movie! For those of you who know me, I really don’t enjoy this genre of movie, however, Brokedown Palace has chick power all wrapped into one great drama of a movie.

Two best friends, Alice and Darlene, (Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsdale) are planning the trip of a lifetime.  The two recent grads determined to take a great trip to the great country of Thailand for one last “hoorah.”  While on their trip, they befriend an ever-so-charming good looking hunk from Australia, who seems to take interest in Darlene.  He proposes the three of them take a trip to Hong Kong.  After much persuasion, she and Alice head off to the airport with their free tickets to Hong Kong to continue with their adventure.  Until they were conned by the hunky Australian and stopped dead in their tracks for smuggling drugs out of the country.  The girls are trapped in a whirlwind of foreign languages and policies that they know nothing about.  Next thing they know, they are spending their days at a women’s prison which would look like today’s work camp.  With no seemingly way out, the girls contact a “yankee” attorney, Hank, (Bill Pullman) who attempts to save the girls from a life of misery.

Besides the corny late 90′s costume attire, I love this movie!  This film is the story of two strong female friends who are against all odds.  I enjoy both of their characters and cherish the growth of each character.  Brokedown Palace is a strong dramatic film that has probably been lost in the past 10 years (it actually came out in 1999!)  I encourage you to go back in time and watch this one!

PS.  Can anyone tell me where Claire Danes has gone??  I love her acting ability and haven’t really seen her since Shopgirl which came out in 2005.  (This is also an amazing movie!)

I am a 20-something female from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. I am married and a proud parent of two wonderful cats, Klaus and Liza! I love playing board games & video games, reading anything, talking to people, yoga, and drinking lots and lots of coffee. I would consider myself a pretty easy going person who can basically get along with anyone.

I LOVE this movie. Of course at the time this movie came out I was a huge Claire Danes fan. I still am. My So Called Life is one of my all time favorite TV shows. :)

Claire Danes was in Stardust (semi)recently, and Temple Grandin this year! :D Will be giving this one a try. Thanks!
