Though this film was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes, it’s really not my favorite. There are a lot of interesting moments, but not enough to stretch out for an entire movie. Or, maybe it’s actually the opposite problem, they left too much in. A funny mistake for a film that is about a writer/director’s film being poorly edited in an attempt to ruin him.
The film inside the film is actually the best thing about this movie. Unfortunately, that’s really only shown fully in the last ten minutes or so. To wait through a rich, battering husband and two women selling themselves not to mention the director going blind for fourteen years to get to the best part was…well…how shall I say it? Not so much fun. Portillo and Novas are standouts, however. If you watch on dvd, be sure to watch the special feature “The Cannibalistic Councillor.” You will not regret it.
