Couples Retreat

couples_retreatJason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia’s (Kristen Bell) marriage is on the road to divorce. Recognizing this, they desperately seek help. They plan a couple’s retreat to The Eden West Resort, a beautifully tropical resort specializing in spiritually healing relationships. However, there is one catch. They cannot afford to go alone. So, with a somewhat manipulative scheme they recruit their friends to go on the trip by promising them fun paradise activities of jet skiing and relaxation with no couple’s counseling attached.

Once the couples land in paradise everyone is ecstatic for the fun activities. Unfortunately, they find out they are completely obligated to the mandatory couples counseling. If they try to skip out they will be forced to leave and Jason and Cynthia will be unable to get the counseling they need to revive and strengthen their marriage. So, the couples suck it up and stay.

Along with stripped down group counseling, each couple is forced to attend therapy sessions that result in the couples questioning their own relationships. A bulging yoga instructor, a shark attack and an intense guitar hero battle add to the comedic element of the film.

In addition to Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, Couples Retreat features an all-star cast of Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau, Kristin Davis and Faizon Love. The cast might be great but this is definitely a mediocre comedy.  Couples Retreat is a great concept with a unique story line but this comedy style has been done before.  It’s the same comedy over and over and it’s getting a little bit old.

As similar as it is to other films, Couples Retreat did have it’s funny parts. If you liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man you will enjoy Couples Retreat. If you’re sick of these films, save your money and wait for the DVD.

Hello :) My name is Brianna! I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in May 2008 and I am currently attending Roosevelt University to get my Master's in Elementary Education (YAY! KIDS!). I'm 23, I LOVE animals, vegetarianism, MOVIES, music, reading, running, yoga, my fiance Joshua, and my two crazy kitties, Chester and Cinderella [aka Chesterella - the "Brangelina" of kitties]. Personally, I like chick flicks! I'm not crazily obsessed but I have been known to watch my fair share of girly movies :) My favorite movies include: 10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer, Almost Famous, Edward Scissorhands, Goonies, Harry Potter(s), Home Alone 1 & 2, Juno, A Little Princess, Little Women, Mean Girls, The Mighty Ducks (all), Now and Then, and That Thing You Do.
