Cowboys and Aliens

And fail!

Daniel Craig plays a man who is without any memory of his past. He stumbles in the the town of Absolution where Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford) rules the people with an iron fist. Craig’s character falls into some trouble and almost gets shipped out of town. That night they’re suddenly attacked and the people get abducted by ‘demons’ from the sky. He teams up with Ford’s character and the mysterious Ella (Oliva Wilde) in search of answers and to get their people back.

I really wanted to like this film. There were so many great people working on it. An ongoing list of actors I love! Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Sam Rockwell just to name a few. And a great crew: Jon Favreau, Roberto Orci, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman even Spielberg had his name tied to this.

I think the material took itself to seriously. I was expecting this to be a lot of fun! Mixing polar opposite genres seemed like such a good idea. But the film was too dark and humorless.

It was also predictable and at times silly. I could tell which one of the townspeople were going to get abducted or killed before the film was over. And the aliens? I just don’t know what to think about them. One-dimensional, ape-like, lizards who, for all their technology, still insist on killing with their fists instead of their laser guns.

I know this was based on a comic that I haven’t read. After doing a little research though, it seems like this is loosely based on the comic.

I'm a newly graduated college student with a deep love for film- in particular geeky films. While in college I worked for three years at a small town theater as the projectionist. It was the best job I ever had! It also encouraged me to dabble in film reviews. I started a small movie review blog (www.cinemathree.com) where I could talk about what I did and didn't like. I like to keep my film reviews fun and whimsical. I hope to someday pursue film studies further. In the meantime I continue to watch and comment!

  • This is unfortunate…. I hoped this would be good.

    • Well, my dad liked it more then me. I was just disappointed.

      • I’m sure I’ll still watch it, just not in the theater…

  • My husband tried to convince me to see this with him on multiple occasions. I’m glad I stood my ground and never experienced this one.
