Door In The Floor

Though this award winning drama features a children’s book author, it’s definitely one to watch after the kids are in bed. There’s plenty of romance, but it never seems to be between the couples who are actually married. This is definitely an I-am-sure-glad-I-just-got-divorced movie. Not so much of the oh-gee-we-just-met date movie. Watch it with your friends, probably not your significant other. Unless you feel like you two are definitely divorce proof.

Kim Basinger and Jeff Bridges play a successful but troubled couple who have a beautiful life by the ocean. They invite a young man to stay with them for the summer, interning with the husband. Bit by bit, the intern comes to understand the problems of their marriage and the difficult nature of the talented boss he has idolized.

As he begins to help care for their young daughter, he finds out more about the tragic manner in which their older children died. And, he begins to get a crush on Kim Basinger. Jeff Bridges plays a talented, but disturbed man. This is definitely not one of his “Dude” type movies. It’s good, but troubling. If you like it, read John Iriving’s A Widow For One Year on which it was partially based.
