To be a good sport about things, I agreed to watch Drag Me to Hell with my family members. I was a bit scared throughout the entire movie, but I thought I could muster through it. Bad move, considering I had the TV on sleep mode all night, but every time it turned off, I turned it back on for another 60 minutes. Finally getting to bed at 3:30 am or so, I was then able to get a night’s rest!
Christine (Alison Lohman) is a loan officer at her her bank and is up for a big promotion for assistant manager. The big position is between her and some other dork, Stu, who is a sneaky little snake, willing to do whatever it takes to get the position over her. Mrs. Ganush, an old gypsy lady played by Lorna Raver, comes into the bank and explains that she is terribly behind on her home loan and asks for an extension. Christine, being pressured by her boss to make tough decisions, reluctantly informs Mrs. Ganush that she cannot help her and she will be forced to leave her home. Mrs. Ganush, a creepy old lady as it is, begs Christine to help her and to have mercy on her. When Christine denies her help, the gypsy woman swears that Christine will soon “beg her for help”!
The movie continues with a great fight scene in the parking lot between Christine and Mrs. Ganush. The gypsy woman eventually curses Christine with a button that she has plucked from her coat. Within the next few days, Christine undergoes gross and weird happenings all around her. She and her boyfriend Clay (Justin Long…the Apple guy) contacts a fortune teller named Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) who instructs her that she is cursed with the Lamia (also known as the Black Goat). Basically, she’s got 3 days to get rid of this curse or she’ll be taking an extended vacation straight to hell. She continues to be haunted but eventually releases her curse back to the now dead, Mrs. Ganush. There is a twist ending…but I won’t spoil that! Let’s just say, I never saw that one coming!
This movie was definitely a campy-styled horror film. My mother-in-law was actually laughing at most of the scary parts! I thought the movie was mostly gross/disgusting than anything else. Most of the thriller parts were classic “get real quiet then BAM….hits you with something gross and makes you jump!” Coming from someone who is terrified of anything, I was pretty spooked out. If you eat The Shining for breakfast, then you probably won’t be scared of this movie whatsoever.
I would give Drag Me to Hell 2.5 stars. It was a good horror film to get creeped out to, but it was a bit too campy for my taste. Keep in mind, my husband completely disagrees. He said he would give Drag Me to Hell a whomping 4.5 stars! He loved it and actually bought it on Blu Ray! So, ladies, it’s a good flick to snuggle up to because the men obviously love this one!

the old demonic woman seems creeeeeepy
I’m the mother-in-law who saw this movie with Christine. Watching her watch this movie was comical because she was scared to death, hiding her eyes and then peeking through to watch. I thought the movie was scary in parts but some of it was so lame I did actually laugh when I was supposed to be freaked out. I do have to agree with Christine’s rating of this movie, but I also can see owning it if you are a fan of horror films.
yeah this movie scared me at the end when all the demonic stuff was going on! i watched it with my best friend and we kinda was freak out about it. to think ppl really have things following them and hunting them is scary. it was a good scary movie
