Ferrell fans had the opportunity to see him in a different and new inspiring role, one that the world has not seen out of Will Ferrell. This heart-wrenching comedy/drama film based on Raymond Carver’s short story, Why Don’t you Dance?, is a melancholic story of a man’s life, strewn across his front lawn.
Ferrell plays the character of Nick Halsey, a successful business man for over a decade at his sales firm. Due to Nick’s rise and fall history of alcoholism, the company decides to let him go. Once back home, Nick discovers that his wife has left him due to his alcoholic charades. With the locks and codes changed on the house, and no workable credit card, phone, and a repoed car, Nick is left with his few possessions laid across his front lawn. With no where else left to turn, Nick simply lives amongst his belongings and eventually sells his possessions in a yard sale, in an attempt to start over.
What was most appreciated in this film was it’s simplicity. There were no huge characters in this film. The simplest form of writing, acting, and visuals was what gave the edge to this clever and clean film. Will Ferrell will likely surprise audiences with this role. This Stranger Than Fiction-esque film is funny, yet somber. This concept is a unique idea, one that is quite memorable. With no explosions, special effects, outlandish costumes, fantastical imagery, or tacky 3-D effects, Everything Must Go gets back to the roots of creative and fresh filmography. In a nutshell, I highly recommend this film. It is funny, fresh, honest, and it’s humanity will connect with a lot of people.

I really enjoyed this. I would liken this and Will Ferrell to Punch Drunk Love and Adam Sandler.
