Flash Of Genius

I love Greg Kinnear but I really didn’t like this movie very much. I got it because I love inspirational, making it against all odds type movies. But, I don’t know… something was really missing for me here.

Based on a true story, an engineer invents the modern day windshield wiper. Before, they had fewer settings and were not as practical, often leaving drivers nearly blind in the rain. Oddly, being blind in one eye, he envisions making a wiper that works much like an eye blinks.

He shows his invention to the big car companies who steal it from him. In the ensuing law suit which takes many years, he loses his wife as she can’t take what becomes somewhat of an obsession to not just get paid for his work but to be proven the rightful inventor.

I’ve wondered if a few scenes that show his obsession driving his wife crazy have been deleted from the film as one of my problems with it was that I really didn’t see her as someone who would have left him. I needed a few more examples of how annoying it was to live with to find it a bit more believable. I’ll still watch any movie Kinnear is in, but you can pass this one by without too much worry.
