Gentlemen Broncos

Gentlemen Broncos follows a young, geeky author named Benjamin (Michael Angarano) as he visits Cletus Fest, a camp for aspiring home schooled writers.  There he meets his science fiction literary idol, Donald Chevalier (Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement), who not surprisingly turns out to be an egocentric jerk.  When Chevalier announces a contest for the Cletus writers which would grant them an amazing 1,000 published copies of their book, Benjamin jumps at the chance to submit his bizarre sci-fi novel, Yeast Lords.

Meanwhile, two other Cletus nerds offer Benjamin a chance to turn Yeast Lords into a super-low-budget film, giving him a post-dated check for five hundred dollars, which he gladly accepts.  The two proceed to demolish the plot and exclude Benjamin from the creative process.

As filming continues for this amateur Yeast Lords production, Chevalier reads Benjamin’s eccentric work and, under pressure from his publisher to come out with a new novel, decides to steal it.  He alters some character descriptions and plot ideas, renames it Brutus and Balzaak, and sells it like crazy.  Benjamin’s more-than-odd mother (Jennifer Coolidge) and other weird supporting characters help liven the plot as Chevalier’s secret unfolds.

Gentlemen Broncos was created by Jared and Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and there were definitely some obnoxious similarities to Napoleon that could have been avoided.  However, the movie as a whole was quite funny, mostly due to its outrageous randomness – testicle self-repair, mammary cannons, and flying laser-eyed doe, to name a few.

I tend to enjoy Jemaine Clement always, and Angarano plays a great stereotypical and awkward sci-fi geek.  Gentlemen Broncos is certainly not the best film you’ll ever see, nor is it the worst.  If you are in the mood for something shockingly silly, give this one a try. I promise you will laugh at least once.

I’m Jenna, and I'm a self-proclaimed chick flick skeptic. I think Bill Murray is always funny and Will Ferrell is never funny. I like strong female characters, witty dialogue, and anything that exercises my brain.
