Get Him to the Greek

Can someone tell me what is up with the movie industry lately? Come on! Where have all the genius movie-makers gone?! It’s been a sad few weekends for Hollywood and unfortunately this weekend didn’t get any better. Get Him to the Greek was released Friday and unfortunately it is yet another ridiculous comedy that everyone will forget about. This is a comedy film that had some high hopes for Jonah Hill fans, but I am sad to report that this movie will likely follow the recent movie-making trend and flop and die on the side of the road.

Record company intern, Aaron Greenberg (Hill) lands the chance of a lifetime by being asked to escort the notorious rock and roller Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).  As this is his first major mission for the company, Aaron does his best to ensure that Aldous remains sober and makes various appointments such as the Today Show and his comeback gig at L.A.’s Greek Theater.  Aldous poses as a sex machine, free of worry, and always ready for a party.  Aaron does his best to keep up with the rock-star lifestyle, but manages to get an ear-full from his boss, Sergio, played by Sean ‘P.Diddy’ Combs.  Aaron and Aldous form an odd friendship through their journey to get Aldous to the Greek Theater.  Long story short, Aldous comes to an understanding of life and undergoes a sober lifestyle.  Aaron uses his successful and genuine care for Aldous as a springboard to opening up his own label.

No plot you say?  Exactly.  Unfortunately Get Him to the Greek took a slippery slope format throughout the film.  The movie started out high with great laughs and great energy.  As the movie continued onward, the vivacity didn’t follow.  I lost interest about halfway through the film.  My husband even leaned over and apologized for making me see this movie with him on our Friday night.  Get Him to the Greek relied heavily on making fools out of characters who were either drunk or stone and even threw in a plethora of unnecessary naked booby scenes.  Pretty pathetic way to make a crowd laugh if you ask me.  This is definitely not your “family friendly” film, and was definitely not worth my time or money to see in a theater.  In all honesty, I will likely not see this movie again nor recommend seeing this one.  I hope Jonah Hill and his comedy crew try again.  I think the potential is there, however, I would recommend creating a smarter comedy for next time.

Well put Jenna. Why can’t everyone be like Bill Murray, Steve Martin, or Bill Cosby?

  • so annoying that these films get any play. gone are all the smart, truly funny (and not vulgar) comedies. smh

Agreed. I am so tired of seeing movies overwhelmed with breasts and bongs. When did this happen??

I think the high point of the film was when Hill ran into Tom Felton (Drako Malfoy from the Potter films) in a bar and said “I’m at a table in the back with Aldous Snow. Feel free to bring Professor Snape. We’ll play some late night Quidditch.”

That WAS funny. I can’t wait for the new HP! At least we know it will be a quality movie, worth our time and money.

apparently Natalie Portman is set to star in a stoner comedy called Best Buds. Maybe with a female lead, there’ll be less breasts to go along with the bongs!
