In this “Christmas Carol” plot, Connor Meade (Matthew McConaughey) is a famous photographer who has a bad reputation with women. Â He dates many at one time, forgetting names, and just can’t seem to find anyone worth settling down with. Â The first scene of the movie shows him starting to hook up with 1 woman, to only be breaking up with 3 women at one time over the internet. Â Connor leaves to go back to his hometown where his brother, Paul (Breckin Meyer) is getting married. Â Connor thinks that Paul is making the biggest mistake of his life and tries to talk him out of getting married. Â Connor, being the best man, has to escort Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner) down the aisle, and she is not so thrilled to see him.
During the rehearsal dinner, Connor has had a bit too much to drink and thinks he sees his Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas) in the bathroom. Â Uncle Wayne was a big player in his day, and this is who Connor takes after. Â Uncle Wayne lets Connor know that he will be visited by three ghosts this evening. Â Connor just thinks he has had too much alcohol and goes to lay down, only to find the first ghost waiting for him. Â The ghost of girlfriends past (Emma Stone) takes Connor back to where he first falls in love with Jenny. Â This is where we learn who Connor is, and why he became this man who thinks settling with one woman is not worth anything. Â They visit through Connor’s junior high days, where his love for Jenny has grown so much, that he gets his heart broken, and so the playing with women begins. Â
After visiting his past, he goes to find Jenny to apologize for their past experiences, only to ruin the wedding cake. Â Paul’s fiance, Sandra (Lacey Chabert) Â freaks out and really feels that this wedding is taking a turn for the worst. Â Jenny is now more furious with Connor, and when he goes outside for some fresh air, the ghost of girlfriends’ present (Noreen DeWulf) is waiting for him. Â She takes him right back into the house where Jenny and a guy named Brad (Daniel Sunjata) are flirting, and he is asking about Connor. Â As Connor is seeing this friendly banter and flirtatious looks, he starts to worry that he let Jenny slip through his fingers.
Lastly, Connor is visited by the final ghost of the future (Emily Foxler), and just like a Christmas Carol, this ghost does not speak.  Connor finds himself in a church at a wedding.  When he looks up to the alter, he sees Brad, and when he looks down the aisle, there is Jenny.  Connor immediately tries to break up the wedding, but he is only a ghost in this future event.  He leaves the church emotionally torn thinking he has lost everything, when he sees his brother looking over a grave, which he sees is his own.  Connor dies a very lonely man with no one but his brother attending the funeral.  Will Connor learn from his mistakes?  Will Jenny and Connor reunite?  Will Paul and Sandra get married?  You will have to watch to find out!
I thought this movie was very funny. Â It is definitely a typical Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy film, but I still really liked it. Â I also love Jennifer Garner. Â I would have to say that most of my laughs came from Emma Stone. Â Her character was absolutely hysterically, leaving you reminiscing your days back in the 80s. Â I enjoyed that it was set-up in a Christmas Carol plot, and I think that this is a great movie to watch with the girls! Â I saw it in the theater with my two best friends, and we all laughed for most of the movie. Â I give the movie 4 stars, and it comes out today (September 22, 2009)! Â I will be purchasing this movie, and I feel that all women should add this to their Netflix or Redbox list of rentals!
