Going the Distance

Garrett (Justin Long) lives in New York and shares an apartment with his “interesting” friend Dan (Charlie Day). He works for a record label with his other buddy, Box (Jason Sudeikis), but Garrett hates his job. His label never signs any of the bands he finds. On top of that, Garrett struggles with the ladies. He can’t ever seem to fully invest himself in his relationships and he really just doesn’t seem to understand the way women think. So, when he fails to buy his girlfriend a birthday present even though she told him not to get her anything, he’s confused when she dumps him. To cheer Garrett up, Dan and Box take him out for drinks at their regular spot.

Erin (Drew Barrymore) is in New York completing a summer internship with a prominent newspaper. Her sister, Corinne (Christina Applegate) keeps pressuring Erin to talk to her boss about getting a job at the newspaper and to get her life on track. It turns out that Erin is a little behind in her career because she dropped everything in her life to follow a guy to New York and it didn’t work out. After having her article rejected and completely “redlined”, she and her friend decide they need to unwind a little and end up at the same bar as Garret and his buds. They end up meeting because Garrett ruins Erin’s chances of beating the high score at Centipede (love that game!). Ultimately Erin and Garrett end up hitting it off and end up spending the night together. They agree to keep things light as Garrett just got out of a relationship and Erin is moving back to San Francisco in a few weeks. Of course life never ends up quite the way you plan and they both fall hard for each other. The question remains can they make their relationship work long distance??

Seeing as they just don’t make romantic comedies like they used to, I didn’t have high hopes for this movie. I love it when I’m pleasantly surprised and with this movie I absolutely was. I really only have two complaints. One, is that I wish Christina Applegate’s character played a bigger role in the movie. I love her and she always does a great job with her characters. And two, there was a couple of instances where I think they just tried too hard to include some raunchy/vulgar humor. I’m fine with it if it works, but there were a couple of times where it just didn’t. Besides that I found the movie to be pretty funny and cute. I caught myself laughing out loud a few times and the audience members around me seemed to enjoy the movie as well. Drew and Justin gave great performances and both Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day earned their stripes for some of their hilarious comments and hijinks. As an added bonus, the film features music from The Boxer Rebellion. Overall, Going the Distance is a cute flick and worth checking out.
