Iron Man 2

Jon Favreau creates a marvel masterpiece once again with his new film, Iron Man 2.  This film follows Iron Man that was released in 2008 with open arms to the public.  Now, the greatly anticipated sequel has movie gurus and comic book nerds rushing towards theaters.  I doubt fans of the Iron Man will be disappointed, however, as an outsider looking in, I was slightly disappointed in the overall story and slow movement of this film.  Let me paint the picture for you a bit.

Billionaire, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), is feeling the pressure from the public, politics, and government, to reveal what the military calls his weapon of mass destruction, the Iron Man suite.  Stark is adamant that his suite is not a weapon, rather, he is Iron Man and cannot be sold or re-created.  Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark undergoes new enemies trying to replicate his innovation.  Ivan Vanko, played by the amazing Mickey Rourke, is a super intelligent physicist whose mission is to take down Stark, and most importantly, his reputation and power.  With his loyal CEO, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and side-kick, War Machine (Don Cheadle), by his side, Stark confronts his new powerful enemies and shows the world that he really is the Iron Man.

Jon Favreu is known for his “campy” style of marvel films and he didn’t let up one bit with with Iron Man 2.  Although this genre of movie is known for its corny jokes and slightly comical one-liners, this approach did not appeal to me.  I was slightly disappointed with the overall story and use of characters.  There was very little character change that took place and the highs and lows of the movie were so-so.  I forgot to mention that Scarlett Johansson was also featured in this film, however, I found it difficult to watch her act as a secret super-heroine and really didn’t take her seriously in the film, at all.  I was also slightly saddened by the fact that Mickey Rourke was narrowly used in the film.  His evil malefactor could have been stunningly utilized, considering he is one of the best actors I know of and I believe the bad-ass-ness could have been turned up a notch.

But enough of this negativity!  Overall, this movie entertained and that’s what Hollywood is all about.  My husband is a comic book scholar and he highly enjoyed Iron Man 2.  In my opinion, I would recommend saving this one for a rental.  Although there has been a lot of hype, I don’t think Iron Man 2 was quite worth the theater experience and the extra twenty bucks.  With a star rating of 3 you can”t go wrong either way.

      I completely agree!

  • The ball was dropped for the third act of this film. I did like the first confrontation between Whiplash and Stark though. Pretty Intense.
