Leap Year

I understand I may make some of you upset by giving you my opinion on this film, but my job is to honest…even if it’s brutal.  Leap Year leaped towards disaster, from beginning to end.  I think we all knew how this movie was going to start and end-thus it provided a very predictable movie with very predictable character changes.

Anna (Amy Adams) is a picture perfect young woman living in Boston with her “amazing” boyfriend, Jeremy (Adam Scott).  Things are going great between the two:  lots of money, a new fancy pantsy apartment, successful careers, and they’re in love!  When Jeremy fails to propose to Anna after four years, she is determined to take things into her own hands.  She decides to surprise him in Dublin, Ireland, as he is currently there on a business trip.  Her goal is propose to him on Leap Day (February 29th), an Irish tradition where the women propose to their men.  However, Anna is set back with obstacles that obstruct her from reaching her goal.  She ends up at an Irish Pub and meets Declan (Matthew Goode) who reluctantly agrees to drive her to Dublin, himself.

I think we ALL know where this is headed, but I’ll sum it up for you anyway-cause that’s what I do.  Long story short:  Declan and Anna continue comedic obstacles that spark a love interest between the two and prevents Anna from getting to Jeremy until the last minute on Leap Day.  Here comes a twist! (that was sarcastic)  Jeremy ends up proposing to Anna in front of Declan and Anna says, “yes!”  A few months down the road, Anna realizes she made a huge mistake and she can’t stop thinking about Declan.  She returns to Ireland, confesses her love, and they all live happily ever after.

Sorry girls, this one just didn’t do it for me.  This plot was painfully simplistic and requires no brain cells to figure out.  Leap Year uses the same chick flick cliched formulated rise and fall plot with jokes we’ve heard in almost every chick flick film.  The script was pretty cheesey and overly simplistic.  I realize we all love ourselves a corney fairy tale story-but I feel like this film is no different than your typical “chick flick” and does not stand out amongst the rest.  Matthew Goode was great to look at throughout the movie, I will say!  I was also glad to see Kaitlin Olson and John Lithgow play some great character actors.

Leap Year is a very “forgettable” movie- one that I will probably not remember down the road.  The plot was barely there and the acting was so-so.  I would like to say that I saw this movie with two other Chick Flick Reviewers- and they agree with my synopsis!  Leap Year is worth 2 stars-which is a shame because I LOVE Amy Adams.  Not worth seeing this one in the theaters and I think it will end up in the $5 DVD box at WalMart.  But hey-down the road if it’s on the boob tube, it might be worth having on in the background while you’re doing something else.

I agree. I think Amy Adams has the potential (and has shown her potential) to be an amazing actress. Her acting can be real and organic–and I hate that she might be falling into “chick flick” roles. Hopefully she will take some time off, have her baby, and get back to some great films!

you forgot about that suspenseful moment where we all thought they were going to (or maybe just wanted them to) fall off the cliff! hahaha.

good review. agreed…definitely not worth anyone’s time! :)

You’re right! I should have added that wishful thinking. I think if they would have jumped off the cliff at the end it might have bumped up the movie’s star rating!

BEST MOVIE EVER MADE! They should have swapped out Amy Adams for Renee Zellweger because this is a typical Renee movie.

i just noticed that amy adam’s character’s fiance isn’t even on the cover of the movie…how will people ever be able to wait til the end of the movie to find out what happens?!?!

Very good observation. I should have written right at the top of my review, “SPOILER ALERT!”

i thought the movie was amazing. I didn’t want to even get up and go to the bathroom during this movie because i thought i would miss one of those witty one liners. I would say this is right on the top of the list for my favorite romantic comedies. Right beside The Holiday.

I loved the movie. I thought it was clever, cute and funny. My sisters and mother and I watch it whenever the men are out of the house…okay not always, but it’s one of the choices. We don’t live at home anymore, but you’re never too old for mother-daughter parties. And my brothers watch it sometimes too. We all love it. And seriously, you don’t watch chickflicks for the surprise. We all know how they’re all going to turn out. That’s not the point of a chick flick.

I loved it though, exactly what I wanted…know how it going to turn out like Mercy says.. that’s the whole point of a chick flick movie…so stop being so negative about it and enjoy the movie instead… typical movie that u can se over and over again and still have that smile and “aah” feeling..

I loved this movie! You are entitled to your opinion but I could watch this one again and will definitely buy the DVD. I liked the twists that added to the comedic aspect of this movie and found the acting to be well done. I didn’t have high expectations going into it and was pleasantly surprised!
