My son, boyfriend, and I absolutely loved this movie!! We had the pleasure in seeing this movie in our small rural theatre, and as I looked around…I saw that there were only three other families….Yes, three families…(I did say that the movie theatre is small)… With the various age groups that ranged in that room, many of us had laughed at the same scenes, and then there was some….like us….which only laughed at the dry humor scenes. All in all, there are many types of humor that is shared with this film.
Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) was to be married to weatherman, Derek Dietl (Paul Rudd), but did not happen due to Susan being struck by a meteorite that had fallen out of the sky, which caused her to grow enormous in size. The military had taken her to a secret hideout where there too were various other monsters, which were all directed under command by General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland). This is where she meets: B.O.B (Seth Rogen), Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), the Missing Link (Will Arnett), and Insectosaurus….who doesn’t need a voice…as he is quite amusing to just watch and look at…..
Susan aka “Ginormica†is having a hard type coping with her sudden changes and misses everyone at home. She is shut out completely from the outside world and can only communicate with the monstrous prisoners.
Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) learns of the special substance, quantonium that had found its place on Earth and sends a robot to find it. The President of the United States (Stephen Colbert) tries to reason with the robot and requests for it to leave, which as anyone can imagine…didn’t happen. Mayhem happens and the General offers for the Monsters to defeat the Alien Robot. The Monsters defeat the Robot and they are set free. This is where Susan goes back home to visit family and friends. When she returns home, she finds that her husband-to-be does not want to learn to love the person that she has become, and she learns herself to accept who and what she has transformed into.Â
Susan gets kidnapped by Gallaxhar, and when she tries to escape, gets trapped into a machine where the substance, quantonium, gets extracted from Susan. Gallaxhar uses this to create a clone army where his ultimate goal is to take over Earth. Mayhem happens again and the Monsters work together to save Susan….and of course defeats the Aliens. There are lots of fast past moving scenes….which means, attention span of a child will definitely last a lot longer than the norm.
This movie definitely is worth renting, and I wish that I would have seen it in 3-D. If you have a chance to see it in 3-D…I would definitely recommend in doing so! (The double DVD pack includes B.O.B.’s Big Break with 3-D glasses!!)
Did You Know?
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The movie was the first computer animated movie to be directly produced in a stereoscopic 3-D format instead of being converted into 3-D after completion.
-        There has been a couple short semi-sequels created from this film: B.O.B.’s Big Break (featured on 9/26/09) and Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space (featuring in October)
