Julianne “Jules” Potter (Julia Roberts) and Michael O’Neal (Dermot Mulroney) have been best friends since college. They even made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them was married by the age of 28. It has been a while since the two of them have seen or spoken to each other, so Jules is really curious when she gets an urgent phone call from Michael. It just so happens that he is 28 and she is about to turn 28.
To her surprise, Michael actually called to let her know that he’s getting married in four days and would like nothing more than for her to be there and support him. Michael tells her that it’s a big traditional wedding with a few days of events leading up to the ceremony. Having been the woman in Michael’s life for the past nine years, Jules suddenly realizes that she loves Michael and is determined to use those extra days to win him back. When she meets Michael’s bride-to-be, Kim “Kimmy” Wallace (Cameron Diaz), Jules sees for herself that this girl really is perfect. However, sweet naïve Kimmy tries buddying up with her future husband’s best friend. She reveals all her concerns about her relationship with Michael and she even asks Jules to be her maid of honor! Armed with insider information from both sides Jules cooks up a plan to turn Kimmy and Michael against each other by playing to their insecurities.
Meanwhile, Jules’ current closest friend George Downes (Rupert Everett) keeps trying to convince her to drop the shenanigans and just tell Michael the truth. Naturally, Jules’ plan starts to unravel and she decides to tell Michael the truth with the actual ceremony only hours away. So, who’s it going to be? Does Michael choose Jules or Kimmy?
I absolutely loved this movie when it first came out. I still find it highly entertaining and endearing. I really enjoy the ridiculousness of the opening scene and it makes me wish I could be in a movie, just so I can be in dance/musical sequence. Even though Rupert Everett’s character steals the show, the rest of the cast delivers too. This film is funny and sweet and contains some of my all time favorite chick flick movie scenes. Jules’ giant almost-brick-like cell phone is a funny reminder that this film is dated. It’s an oldie, but a goodie. Have some fun with it and enjoy!

Loved it too! Can’t stop singing “the moment I wake up…l whenever anyone talks about it!
AHHH!! I love this movie so much! I could watch it over and over again! I am so pleased with how this movie ended. It would not have been as great had it ended the other way around.
Thanks for the great review!
