Adam (Ashton Kutcher) and Emma (Natalie Portman) first meet in summer camp. Despite being so young, there is an instant connection. As the years go by they inevitably keep running into each other. Their fate is ultimately sealed when Adam gets some upsetting news and ends up drunk dialing Emma.
Things start off relatively casual. Adam and Emma agree upon some basic ground rules, but really the only rule is not to get attached. The deal is that they are friends with benefits. This arrangement is very convenient for Emma. She is a doctor and works crazy hours. She even says herself that she doesn’t have time to worry about hurting anyone’s feelings. Plus, Emma’s not really an emotional person and she runs the very second someone shows real interest in her. So, this deal is perfect for Emma.
Adam on the other hand is a big sweet heart. He believes in love and relationships. He is a guy though, so keeping things purely physical shouldn’t be too tough. And Adam’s job keeps him pretty busy too. He is an aspiring writer. In the meantime though, he works hard as assistant on a teen TV show to make a name for himself and to step out from under his father’s shadow. Adam’s father (Kevin Kline) is a famous TV actor and is responsible for a lot of the grief that Adam goes through. As it turns out, the deal with Emma ends up being a much needed distraction for Adam. Essentially, Emma and Adam have the perfect plan, except even the best made plans can and often go wrong.
This movie is cute and pretty funny. Warning! The humor is pretty raunchy. After Something About Mary and American Pie, people seem to keep pushing the envelope and are getting closer and closer to “highly inappropriate.” I still laughed a lot though. There were just a few instances where I questioned if it was ok for me to laugh. I even heard a fellow moviegoer say in the middle of a scene “Oh no they didn’t.” I really enjoyed the supporting cast/all the actors that played Adam and Emma’s closest friends and co-workers (Lake Bell, Mindy Kaling, Greta Gerwig, etc….). I gave this film 3.5 stars because it’s not one of those that you absolutely have to race out to the theaters to see, but definitely check it out at some point, especially if you need a few laughs.

i liked your review, but this will be a rental for me
