Objectified

A complete revolutionary documentary about a topic that secretly controls our lives, emotions, and spirit.

Objectified, directed by Gary Hustwit in 2009, is a breakthrough piece of film that captures the essence of the meaning of objects and design.  This film allows its viewers to learn and ponder on the relationship between humans and manufactured objects.  Innovators such as Chris Bangle, who is an American automobile designer most noted for his work for BMW, gives his raw impressions of what car consumers are looking for in a car and the idea of making a car “sexy.”  Designer Jonathan Ive, President of Industrial Design for Apple, gives his philosophy on the art of designing and the innovation and logic that comes with it.  The audience is graced by numerous other ingenious designers who discuss the relationship with human emotion and the objects that surround our lives.  This documentary gives an impression that cannot be forgotten and is something that cannot be missed.

What I enjoyed most about the film, is it’s new ideas and incredible realism.  Personally, I consistently forget that I am surrounded by objects that carry a meaning for me. For example, I am typing on an Apple computer.  What does this represent?  What was your first impression?  How did you come to your impression?  I am sitting on a couch, surrounded by pillows, feet up on a coffee table.  All of these items I hand picked for some reason, and this reason allowed the object to retain a relationship with me.  I was blown away by the idea of design and although the design of the object seems effortless to me, and in fact I often forget there was a complex design to the object, there is great detail in the item that consistently goes unnoticed.

I realize I am sounding crazy and complex, however, Objectified has opened my eyes to the designing world and the influence it carries over all of us.  If you are in the design field (of any kind) or even if you are like me and have no creative whim about you, Objectified is a film that will take your breath away and allow you an understanding of the world you live in everyday.
