Paper Heart is a mockumentary featuring Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi (playing themselves). A film crew decides to create a documentary based on Charlyne’s skepticism of love. Basically, this is a movie about a documentary. The documentary follows Charlyne’s travels as she interviews and strives to define love and fulfill her uncertainty through others’ definitions of the famed four-letter word.
She meets Michael at a party in LA and becomes shyly intrigued when she hears that he likes her. Thus, a romantic relationship is formed and filmed as a part of the documentary. The relationship is cute and brings you back to the days when you would get butterflies from instant messaging and talking on the phone to the nervous excitement of holding hands and kissing for the first time. Their relationship is new and CUTE.
I have mixed feelings about this film. I found myself laughing and aww-ing at some parts and irritated with others. I enjoyed the interviews Charlyne was conducting, especially the playground scene where the children call her out for not believing in love. Another great feature was the paper puppet show memories. Every time Charlyne would interview someone that shared an old love exemplifying memory there would be a special paper puppet show that was reenacting the affectionate recollection.
In contrast, I absolutely despise the fact that Michael Cera plays the exact same character in every film however; I still get suckered into his adorable nerdy-ness. Ugh! There’s something about him that won’t let me dislike him while I’m watching the film. His cute, witty personality is captivating and I seem to fall for it every time.
Additionally, I found myself distracted by Charlyne’s character. I struggled to define her age because in the film she appears really young (late teens?) with an extremely naive personality however; I was partially led to believe that she was a young 20-something based on her semi-mature living arrangements and comedic career. 20-something seems too old for her quizzical persona.
I give Paper Heart 2.5 stars because I don’t think its pay $10 + $12 for popcorn and a cherry coke worthy. I definitely recommend renting it when it comes out on dvd. Also, it is significant other friendly. Josh, my fiancé/fellow CFR-er, was seen laughing and enjoying the film.
