Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel to the first two movies. It shows the start of the paranormal activity that has haunted Katie and her sister Kristi since their childhood. Katie being the woman being terrorized by strange activity in the first film and Kristi being the mother in the second film.
I rather liked the first Paranormal Activity but I skipped the second one after reading a few reviews. Since this one was getting better reception from the critics, I decided to give it a chance. Usually I skip horror movies in general but I have a strange interest in the style of these films: Documentary style- similar to Ghost Hunters which is a guilty pleasure of mine.
What I think was great about this film is the simplicity of it. The filmmakers didn’t try to make it 3D, they took us back to 1988 and they kept it at a quick hour and a half.
Simplicity is was makes this franchise so creepy! It feeds the natural human fear of the dark. As an audience member, I was gasping at the smallest of noises or the slightest of shadows. The film had a great pace to it, building up the anticipation so that when something did happen, well, I may’ve spilled my popcorn a couple of times.
The filmmakers decided to add a little humor in this one- both intentional and unintentional. The intentional jokes were a nice break from the suspense. The unintentional humor being the name of the ghostly entity. Toby? Really? All I could think of was one of my favorite youtube personalities.
It was a good film to start out the Halloween season. I wasn’t blown away but I left satisfied and a little unnerved by all the shadows in my room when I went to bed that night.
