Patrick Swayze Remembered

Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze

It’s always hard to lose somebody and it’s even harder to have to watch their decline.  The whole world watched Patrick Swayze fight and eventually lose his battle with pancreatic cancer.  Swayze passed away on September 14th, leaving behind an impressive film career as well as a hit TV drama, the Beast.

Swayze’s career boasts some of the coolest “Guy Movies” as well as some of the most memorable Chick Flicks of all time.  I first saw him in The Outsiders as Darry, the cool older brother who always made sure everything was okay.  His role in that movie stuck out so much, which was pretty hard considering his fellow cast members (Tom Cruise, Rob Low, Ralph Macchio and Emilio Estivez – just to name a few).  To me, that was one of the most interesting aspects of Swayze’s acting: he always managed to stick out even when he was surrounded by so much talent.  He really made the characters his own.

Most of the readers of this site will remember him for Ghost and Dirty Dancing: two of the most popular Chick Flicks ever made.  His role as the blue-collar dance instructor will forever be immortalized with the line “Nobody puts Baby in the corner” (from Dirty Dancing).  And who will ever look at a pottery wheel the same way after the scene from Ghost?  Both of these films went on to gross millions of dollars in the box office and in DVD sales even today.

His films also included Roadhouse, Donnie Darko and my personal favorite Swayze film, Point Break.  Ladies, if you haven’t seen this movie but your guy has – I highly suggest this for a movie night.  It’s not a Chick Flick but it will be a movie that he will enjoy.

With all of this being said, we here at Chick Flick Reviews can’t let the passing of such a Chick Flick icon go unmentioned.  Patrick Swayze has had the kind of career in which he has been able to impact almost any moviegoer regardless of their taste in films.  He’s a guy-flick super hero and a Chick Flick “Mr. Perfect” who also did a bit of Broadway theater.  Mr. Swayze – you will be missed.

I absolutely love him Donnie Darko. Just the fact that he was the one playing that roll made it a ten times better movie.

What a nice tribute, Bryan. Goldy told me to check out your writing about Patrick – at first I read Christine’s and was a little worried about you, then I saw her name! lol! I haven’t seen Donnie Darko, and I don’t think Goldy has either – maybe a Saturday night movie rental idea! Miss you! Keep my baby safe in that scary town you live in! Seriously, nice review!
