Retro Review – Dirty Dancing

dirtydancingIn honor of the beloved Patrick Swayze, I decided to review one of my favorites:  Dirty Dancing!

I hope everyone reading this has seen this movie.  If not, you need to stop reading this and immediately watch it!  Released in 1987 and directed by Emile Ardolino, Dirty Dancing actually takes place in the 1960′s.  Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) stars as an upper-class insecure teenager who is on a summer trip with her family at an upstate New York resort.  Baby unexpectedly falls for Johnny (Patrick Swayze) who is the sexy dance instructor on the resort.  She discovers a world of “dirty dancing” behind the scenes of the resort and seems interested for an escape from her goody-two-shoes life.  Johnny’s dance partner undergoes a painful abortion and is unfortunately unable to continue dancing (Johnny is NOT the father, by the way).  So…Baby somehow finds her way into training with Johnny and his dance partner, in order to keep the dancing entertainment alive at the resort.  Daddy eventually finds out that Baby is becoming involved with Johnny and forbids her to have anything to do with the “entertainment help.”  Baby disobeys her father (which is something she has basically never done) and tells him to stop being a snobby jerk.  A jealous camper sees Baby and Johnny snogging around and reports to them to the camp manager, who eventually fires Johnny.  At the final night of the resort, Baby and Johnny act out the performance of a lifetime and Johnny tells everyone how Baby has changed his life and he is a new man.  Daddy accepts that Baby is more responsible and adult than he thinks.  Everyone dances…everyone is happy.

There are so many reasons why I love this film.  I thought it would be best to name my

Top 10 Reasons of Why I LOVE Dirty Dancing:

1.  The very end, when Baby is brave enough to jump into Johnny’s arms for “the lift” and everyone breaks into dance.  You know every time you hear “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” (by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes) you think of this scene!

2.  The water scene, when Baby and Johnny are practicing “the lift” and balancing on the log…so sexy!

3.  When Baby and Johnny are practicing in the studio lip synching to “Lover Boy.”

4.  Anything that comes out of Baby’s sister, Lisa Houseman‘s mouth, played by Jane Brucker…her character is so stupidly funny!

5.  When the Dirty Dancing crew is grinding in the back resort house…sooo sexy!

6.  When Johnny walks up to Baby and her Daddy and says, “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

7.  When Johnny and Baby are practicing their routine, and he brushes the side of her boob.  She laughs and can’t stand it…makes me laugh every time.

8.  Baby’s line:  “Me?  I’m scared of everything!  I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scare of what I did, of who I am.  And most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”  Baby’s big moment.  Then there is some dirty dancing and sexy time.

9.  Baby’s puffy 1980′s hair…it’s amazing.

10.  Umm….any and all parts where Patrick Swayze is dancing.

This retro receives 5 stars.  Patrick Swayze created history when he filmed Dirty Dancing.  He was a phenomenal actor and will be greatly missed.  If you haven’t seen this movie in a while, pop it in…it’s a great classic!

Christine – This is one of my favs, too. It’s the movie that seems to be on all the time on lazy Sunday afternoons – I can’t turn it off, even though I’ve seen it a thousand times!

I completely agree Christine! This is one of my all time favorite movies, and I was fortunate enough to see it on broadway and it was so amazing! I love your top 10 favs, and I have to add one of my own. That would be Baby’s sister singing and dancing during talent show practice! I laugh hysterically everytime I see it!
