“Allison, Allison…Kiss me, I’m Allison!” Yes- I reviewed Hocus Pocus to get into the Halloween spirit, and I thought I would start out with my favorite line from the movie, because it makes me laugh every time! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this Halloween favorite, so it felt good to see this one again.
Exactly 300 years ago, on Halloween night, the three Sanderson Sisters, Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) were executed in Salem. Right before they died, they cast a spell on Halloween night, hoping a virgin will light the black flame candle and release them from their graves. In 1993, Max and his sister, Dani (Thora Birch) are out trick-or-treating and run into Max’s crush, Allison. Max is a non-believer of magic hocus pocus, and he and the girls head to the witch’s hut to explore. Max, of course, lights the candle and the Sanderson Sisters come back from the grave. They are on the hunt for children to suck the life out of them to make them young, again! The night turns into Allison, Max, and Dani running around the town trying to stop the sisters from killing off children. They have some help with Binks, a boy from the 1600s whom the witches cast a spell on, turning him into a cat that never dies. Oh, and they also get some help from Billy, an old boyfriend of Winifred’s, who is now a zombie. I know you are on the edge of your seat, dying to know what happens, but you’ll have to watch the movie to find out if they actually save all the children from the Sanderson Sisters!!
Hocus Pocus is lots of fun and is definitely a great flick to put you into the Halloween mood. Heck, it was made in 1993 and here I am watching it 16 years later! Bette Midler is a great actress back then and now. Her character is lots of laughs and she creates a witch that the audience learns to love-hate. It was also pretty funny seeing Sarah Jessica Parker play a role as a ditsy witch! Hocus Pocus has a PG rating due to the word “yabbos” and perhaps the zombie guy is a little scary for the young ones. It’s a fun, corny, Disney movie that is still a good movie to watch and is a movie kids can enjoy, as well. Hocus Pocus is definitely worth 3 stars because it’s a movie I can watch every year around this time! To top it off, it’s only $6 over at amazon.com! Happy Halloween!!
