Retro Review – Steel Magnolias

steelmagsYes, my friends..it’s time for a retro-review! This has got to be one of my favorite chick flicks! Don’t let the corny movie cover frighten you! A few of our users (Kira and Angie) commented that this was one of their favorite chick flicks, and it inspired me to watch it and review it for all of you who are living in this world without seeing this great movie.

Steel Magnolias is overflowing with some great actresses. The basic plot of the entire movie is following a band of friends, who are true southern Louisianna Bells, through Truvy’s Beauty Parlor, owned by Truvy (THE Dolly Parton). This close-knit of women includes M’Lynn (Sally Field), her daughter, Shelby, (Julia Roberts), the wretched Ouiser (pronounced Weezer) played by Shirley MacLaine, Clairee played by the amazing Olympia Dukakis, and the mysterious Anelle (Daryl Hannah). The movie follows this group of women and their families and gives audiences insight into the celebrations and sorrows of life.

steelmags2I really can’t give you more of a plot summary than that, without giving the movie away! The movie premise is about the interactions of these women and how their lives intertwine. It is a genuine story about the strength of friendship (so awesomely corny!) What I love about this movie is that one minute I am laughing and the next I am a sobbing mess. I love the colorful characters played beautifully by each actress. Each character has a different age, background, view, and a unique sense of self. I love watching these women come together and merely listening to their conversations…it’s so typical and it’s moments that women can relate to!

I am giving this movie 4 stars. Do yourself a favor and rent this movie if you have never seen it (heck, for only $7.99 you can buy it at amazon.com). Yes, it was filmed in 1989, but don’t let the cheesy movie cover and 1980′s costumes throw you off! Even in 2009, this is a classic movie to laugh and cry with.

I am a 20-something female from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. I am married and a proud parent of two wonderful cats, Klaus and Liza! I love playing board games & video games, reading anything, talking to people, yoga, and drinking lots and lots of coffee. I would consider myself a pretty easy going person who can basically get along with anyone.
