Retro Review – Fame (1980)

After seeing Fame (2009), I decided to sit and watch all of the 1980 version.  Usually I find the original movies better, but this would be the opposite for Fame (1980).

The plot of the movie is the same with many of the same scenes.  Teenagers in New York City that feel they have talent to make it in any performing arts profession attends the academy of performing arts.  The teenagers in this film undergo the same pressures of success and failure in school, their art, and life choices.  However, in 1980, homosexuals and interraical relationships were kept hidden from the public, and you can see the problems these teens have trying to overcome these feelings.  The only actor that I have seen outside of this film is Paul McCrane, but a couple of the actors went on to star in the TV series fame, which include Lee Curreri and Gene Anthony Ray.

I was not as pleased with Fame.  The movie is over 2 hours long and the years through the academy seem endless and combined into one long year.  They also show a lot more auditions that were pretty meaningless.  I love movies that were filmed and directed in the 80s, but i just could not get into this one.  The talent is incredible, but I just I did not like the way the academy was presented in this film.  This film is rated R, for a lot of strong language and some nudity.  I just do not feel that this should be how an academy of performing arts should be presented.  Even the teachers and professors act in a way that we would never see educators behave in our society.  I feel everyone would appreciate Fame (2009) a lot more than the 1980 version.

I disagree! The Fame (2009) was too High School Musical-like. I went to a performing arts high school and the original Fame was much closer to the truth of what it was like than the bubblegum version of last year. Fame 2009 was downright disappointing for me :(
