This film is about young singles trying to find love in Seattle. There’s Steve (Campbell Scott) who bumps into Linda (Kyra Sedgwick) at a concert and after a few failed attempts at talking to her he runs into her again later on that night at a magazine stand. Is it fate? Janet (Bridget Fonda) who is Steve’s neighbor is head over heels for her other neighbor, Cliff (Matt Dillon). The only problem is that Janet is in denial about their relationship. Cliff is still seeing other people and simply doesn’t appreciate Janet. In order to get his attention she contemplates getting a boob job. And then there’s Debbie (Sheila Kelley). She also lives in the same apartment building. Debbie desperately wants to find someone and decides to try a video-dating service in order to find her match. Does she find what she’s looking for?
Each character’s pursuit of love and personal growth is pretty amusing and very easy to relate to. There’s something very sweet and clever about this movie. It deals with complex relationship issues while also making fun of it all. As an extra bonus, this film is set smack in the middle of Seattle’s grunge scene. Look out for clips of live performances by some of the hottest acts of that time and cameo appearances by Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell. I really enjoy this movie. I can watch it over and over again. It’s one of my favorites. The soundtrack is pretty amazing too. Check it out!
