Star Trek

Star TrekI wanted to change my movie selection a bit this week, so I decided to watch Star Trek….and I am very happy that I did so!  This has been the best Sci-Fi movie I have seen.  In fact, I absolutely loved this movie so much; I had to watch it twice in one day!

The film begins when the USS Kelvin is faced with a combat mission against the Romulans, which turned out to be a trap to destroy the Starfleet.  On this day, James Kirk (Chris Pine), is born in an escape shuttle craft that had fleed the USS Kelvin.  His father, George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth), went down along with the ship as the auto-pilot was destroyed and he had to fly the ship manually.  As time passes, James Kirk, is greeted by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), during a local bar brawl with some Starfleet members to join the star fleet.  James Kirk is reminded on how prominent his father was and implies the fact that his father was a Captain for only 12 minutes, and within those 12 minutes, he was a hero and saved many lives.  The next day, James Kirk boards the recruitment ship and is determined to make Captain in less time than the allotted, and is successful in doing so.

The character of Lt. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is also introduced and is faced with being an outcast due to being half human.  Spock is discriminated his whole life and decides to join the Starfleet Academy.  There is lots of friction between the personalities of James Kirk and Spock throughout the movie, but they both learn quickly that they must work together to complete the overall mission.

There is an emergency with Planet Vulcan, and the cadets are called to duty, with the exception of James Kirk.  After James Kirk learns that he was not appointed to duty, he boards the USS Enterprise, commanded under Captain Christopher Pike, with a little help from his friend.  He makes way to the bridge and informs Captain Pike that the “lighting storm” that they are about to face is a trap.  Kirk reminds Pike of the day that the USS Kelvin had gone down.  The Romulans, who are under command of Captain Nero, demand Captain Pike to aboard their vessel.  This is where he commands Lt. Spock to take command of the USS Enterprise and cadet James Kirk to First Officer.  Planet Vulcan is destroyed after red matter has been injected in the hole that the Romulans have drilled in the planet’s core.

As friction on the bridge builds up, Captain Spock demands Kirk to be removed from the ship after being accused of mutiny and gets stranded in the desert planet Delta Vega.  On Delta Vega, he runs into the old Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and he learns that he is from the future and educates him that Captain Nero blames the Federation for the destruction of his planet by a supernova.  James Kirk makes his way back to the USS Enterprise and takes command after forcing Spock to have an emotional and violent breakdown.  Now, Kirk must save planet Earth after they learn that is the next target for Captain Nero.  After Earth is saved, they go after the Romulans vessel to save Captain Pike.  The USS Enterprise encounters a close call with the black hole that was created after the Romulan ship is blown to pieces.  After the Enterprise defeats the gravitational pull from the black hole, they arrive back to Earth safely and James Kirk is appointed Caption of the USS Enterprise.

kirkI was never a “Trekie” (not even sure if it is spelled correctly) in the early days, but this movie is the best Sci-Fi flick that I have seen.  There were lots of action, and with all of the twisty plots, you are certain to keep your interest going.

J.J. Abrams certainly has outdone himself on this movie!  The Special Features and Gag Reel is definitely worth watching.  I was really impressed on how the scenes were shot and how the special effects were done.

I give this movie 5 stars, and I definitely cannot wait until the Star Trek sequel which is proposed to come out in 2011!

That’s surprising to me! I don’t personally know anyone that didn’t like this movie. I hated the TV show growing up and only saw this movie because it was part of a double feature at the drive-in, and I was amazed at how good it was.

I agree w/ you Jen. I LOVED this movie! I don’t think my generation was into Star Trek either, but I definitely appreciated this movie and I really enjoyed it! I don’t really care for sc-fi-ish movies…but this one was great! And I think we saw this one together when it first came out!? !

Wel, you are partially correct Christine. We saw the first 10 minutes of the movie together…I started to fall asleep at the drive-in…since it came after Transformers II.
