Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch centers around Baby Doll – a young woman who is institutionalized at an asylum. She enters into many different layers of fantasy in order to escape her predicament, both literally and figuratively. She is joined by a few other girls in the asylum/whore-house in her quest to escape.

The drawbacks to this film is the overabundance of slow motion and CGI. I’m a fan of Zach Snyder but what was supposed to be visually stimulating had me thinking,”seen it” over and over. It also seemed like the film was held back by its Pg-13 rating.

There is definitely a lot in Sucker Punch. There were elements of music video, cliche’ action, anime and metaphor which both fascinated me and confused me at times.

Despite what others say, the cast was very strong and they gave very human performances even when surrounded by fantasy and CGI. I especially liked Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning.

Surprisingly enough, I enjoyed Sucker Punch. I wasn’t blown away by the visuals or depth of story but I had fun watching it. I like seeing women kicking butt for a change. It was nice to see Zach Snyder try and make an action/fantasy story based around female protagonists.

I mean, how can you not enjoy a film with steampunk, zombie nazis?

I'm a newly graduated college student with a deep love for film- in particular geeky films. While in college I worked for three years at a small town theater as the projectionist. It was the best job I ever had! It also encouraged me to dabble in film reviews. I started a small movie review blog (www.cinemathree.com) where I could talk about what I did and didn't like. I like to keep my film reviews fun and whimsical. I hope to someday pursue film studies further. In the meantime I continue to watch and comment!
