Hooray for Bruce Willis and action movies! What would we do without them?! Surrogates is a great story that kept me second guessing myself and allows audiences to take a look into the future and decide who we really want to be.
The story starts with a futuristic world. Humans have come up with this robot called surrogates, that allow humans to control the robots with their minds. We see humans in their little “tanning bed” pods. The humans are able to live their lives through the surrogates without lifting a muscle. This allows humans to be whomever they want to be-living in a careless world where everyone is beautiful and it is almost impossible to get hurt. Until now.
Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) and his partner Peters (Radha Mitchell) are a pair of FBI agents who are called in to investigate a murder of two surrogates. Now normally the humans controlling the surrogates are not harmed, only their robot is harmed. In this case, the actual humans controlling the surrogate were murdered, as well. The use of surrogates is not universally agreed upon. There are reservations of real humans living a hippi-like lifestyle who are being led by The Prophet (Ving Rhames). Greer and Peters discover that The Prophet and the actual humans have gotten their hands on a weapon that can destroy all surrogates and humans controlling them. A millions twists and turns later, it it is up to Greer to decide how the human race will (or won’t) survive.
This film encompasses the fundamental questions of who gets to play God. Willis played an awesome individual with some incredible character changes. Surrogates provides the audience with the ultimate question of ethics and human nature. I loved the way this movie really made me think about our culture and how advanced we come, and frighteningly, how advanced we can become. This drama/thriller/murder mystery movie has some great twists and turns and incorporates some awesome ideas and questions of societal morality. I believe Surrogates deserves four stars because this is a film I would watch again and encourage others to watch. Surrogates came out on Blu Ray and DVD today so check it out at amazon.com because you won’t be disappointed!
