The Brothers Bloom

Just from looking at the cover of The Brothers Bloom, I thought I would be a little bored with it, but it definitely kept my attention. I may not have understood it to the greatest extent, but it was still very entertaining and upbeat. There is a lot of bloodshed, but not to the point where you can’t bare to watch the film. Beneath all the blood (and not being able to understand the ever-changing plot) there is a love story within the film that is much like a real life situation. It’s not the typical “happily ever after” love story, which made me a bigger fan of The Brothers Bloom.

The film starts out showing two brothers Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Adrien Brody) going from foster home to foster home because they seem to keep getting themselves into trouble. Stephen plots out ideas and makes Bloom put them into effect. When they’re older, Stephen thinks up the con of a lifetime. They needed to somehow meet Penelope (Rachel Weisz), a wealthy woman who has lived in her castle alone for quite some time. The boys tell her they sell antiques and later say they are antique smugglers. They really plan to use her for her money, which she later finds out after enduring a great “adventure” with the the brothers and their mute sidekick, Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi), who is an expert in explosives.

While on their trip with Penelope, Bloom starts to fall in love with her. You find yourself wondering if the connection on screen is real emotion, or is all just part of the plan? Bloom tells Penelope that it was all fake, it was all part of the con… but you can see in his eye is he lying. He had really fallen in love with Penelope. This takes the movie into an ending that was definitely not ‘part of the plan.’

I also liked the movie. It kept you wondering all the time. I found myself feeling sorry for Bloom (Adrien Brody) because he has more of heart and has feelings of remorse which is so unlike his brother. I do agree with Kylie about the ending. You’ll have watch it!
