The Men Who Stare at Goats

men_who_stare_at_goats_movie_poster_01Let me just start by saying that I had high hopes going into this movie considering all the big names lined up.  However, I was bitterly disappointed after watching The Men Who Stare at Goats for two reasons:  1.  The movie was horrible.  2.  My seat was miserably uncomfortable.  Thankfully we only spent $5 to see this during matinee hours.

Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) is seeking self-awareness after his wife leaves him for his boss.  On a mission to find himself, he flies off to Kuwait to become the next great reporter to tell the world how this side of the country is really doing.  During his trip, he meets a “retired” special forces agent who is actually part of a secret sector of the military.  Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) takes Bob under his wing and tells him the story of a secret psychic military unit whose goal is to end war with peace.  This branch of government did not use guns or scare tactics, but practiced meditation, yoga, and brain-powering techniques.  He reveals stories of his ability to have visions, enter his mind with peace, and unfortunately mutilate goats with his brain power.  Lyn admits he is not retired, but received a mental message to return to the psychic military base.  Upon their return to the base, they learn that another psychic soldier, Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey) has taken over the brigade and twisted it to reveal the “dark side.”  With the help of Lyn’s retired leader, Bill Django (Jeff Bridges) the team brings peace and freedom back to the psychic military unit.  Now it’s Bob’s mission to tell the world the story of this lost psychic military art form and to begin his new life.

clooney-staring-at-goatsAlthough The Men Who Stare at Goats had some great actors who actually had some great acting moments, the plot was just too far out there for me.  If there is going to be a plot this far-fetched, at least make it funny!  This movie lacked some serious humor and the movie was going no where.  There’s only so much you can do with a stupid idea like this one.  I think the only funny part was the goats…and that’s only because goats are naturally funny.  By mid-movie, I’d had enough of it and I wish I could have taken a nap.  I assure you, I am not being too harsh on this one.  Unfortunately this movie is worthy of one single star, and that’s only because our rating system doesn’t get any lower than that.

I love playing board games & video games, reading anything, talking to people, yoga, and drinking lots and lots of coffee. I would consider myself a pretty easy going person who can basically get along with anyone.
