The Sweetest Thing

Christina (Cameron Diaz), Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair) are sexy young singles that live and party together. After work one day Christina and Courtney arrive home to find Jane crying and drowning her sorrows in ice cream. Her boyfriend of nearly a year just dumped her. Determined to cheer up their friend, Christina and Courtney decide to take Jane out dancing to find Mr. Right Now. Although Christina and Courtney are having a blast, Jane is ready to go home. As a last ditch effort to give Jane a good time, Christina grabs the nearest guy and suggests that he dance with Jane. Used to getting her way, Christina is insulted when Peter (Thomas Jane) refuses. The two argue for a while and ultimately hit it off. Peter’s brother (Jason Bateman) ends up butting into the conversation and suggests that she join them at their hotel for an after party to celebrate his upcoming nuptials in Somerset on Saturday. At the end of the night Christina skips out on the after party, but both Courtney and Jane end up leaving with their own entertainment for the evening. The next morning Christina realizes just how much she likes Peter, so she calls the hotel only to find that he’s already checked out. Christina keeps obsessing over Peter and half jokingly suggests that she could go and crash his brother’s wedding. Tired of hearing about Peter, Courtney calls Christina on her bluff and suggests that they go find him. Christina gives in and the next thing you know the two set off on road trip to crash a wedding and find Peter.

This movie came out shortly after both American Pie movies, so the humor is definitely more on the raunchy side (especially if you see the unrated version). At times you could even say that they went a little overboard, but somehow it still works. It’s goofy, a bit ridiculous and yet they throw in just enough romance to still make it “sweet.” There are some really funny moments that my friends and I still talk about. It’s worth checking out with your gal pals if you’re staying in and doing movie night or after a night out on the town. Cheers!

Hi! I'm Natalie. I enjoy a variety of movie genres (action, horror, comedy, drama, foreign, you name it), but there is a special place in my heart for true chick flicks.

Wait…so what happens to Jane? I actually prefer Selma Blair out of the three of them!

Jane is part of the potentially overboard raunchy segments of the movie. I’ll leave it at that. :) Needless to say she does find Mr. Right Now.
