The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth. . . thanks for coming to dinner

The Ugly Truth starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is not just a romantic comedy for women; men will love it too. Engrossingly humorous R-rated sexual connotations throughout the film will keep you laughing and quite entertained.

Heigl plays Abby, an independent, uptight, perfectionist producer for the Sacramento morning news who is (of course) looking for love. When the ratings for the morning news drop her boss surprise hires Mike (Butler) and adds his segment, “The Ugly Truth” to the news lineup. Abby finds Mike’s blunt, perverted female relationship “self-help” segment repulsing but eventually falls for his advice to score a date with her neighbor (who fulfills her ideal male checklist). Following Mike’s guidance that men only want certain qualities like skinny girls, boobs, compliant personas and SEX, Abby sexifies her appearance, liberates her bossy facade and enhances her flirting skills to win the guy.

I’m not going to lie. From the moment I saw the trailer I could successfully predict the whole movie, but for some reason I was still intrigued to see it. It was the sexually suggestive humor that kept the movie alive and appealing. From the kiss cam crotch rubbing scene to the vibrating panties and big O dinner scene the movie was humorously amusing. Other than the humor the plot is that of a typical chick flick. Girl falls for guy, guy falls for girl, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Katherine Heigl but I feel like she plays a similar character to her role as Jane in 27 Dresses where she conveys the love-seeking perfectionist. I’d love to see her in a different role.

***Additionally, if anyone was a fan of Disney Channel’s Even Stevens, be on the look out for a cameo from the dad as the hot air balloon flier in the end.

All in all, I give The Ugly Truth three stars for the superb explicit humor. I recommend this movie for anyone in the mood for a good laugh. The Ugly Truth is perfect for a fun girls night movie but it is also a movie that will keep significant others entertained.

I'm 23, I LOVE animals, vegetarianism, MOVIES, music, reading, running, yoga, my fiance Joshua, and my two crazy kitties, Chester and Cinderella [aka Chesterella - the "Brangelina" of kitties]. I'm not crazily obsessed but I have been known to watch my fair share of girly movies :) My favorite movies include: 10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer, Almost Famous, Edward Scissorhands, Goonies, Harry Potter(s), Home Alone 1 & 2, Juno, A Little Princess, Little Women, Mean Girls, The Mighty Ducks (all), Now and Then, and That Thing You Do.
